Common Questions

What Is Roofline?

Roofline is the section where your roof joins your walls. Typically in older properties you have a timber box either made for timber boards or plywood that part or fully encapsulates your roof rafter and secures your gutters. the vertical section is your fascia and the horizontal section is your soffit. Your Roofline will protect your timber roof rafters from rot and provide a secure fixing for your gutter and support your last row of slates or tiles.

Should I Repaint It?

Many people come to us after their painter has been honest enough to say you have rotten timbers and they don’t want to paint them as the paint will peel off. You will know yourself if it is leaking or looks rotten you have a problem paint alone will not solve. At the very least rip out the rot first and replace with quality materials before you even consider painting.

You may be getting to the stage in life where you don’t want the hassle and expense of regular painting, and regular should be every few years, ideally three years and no more than five. You may well just not have a reliable quality painter locally or the thought of doing it yourself is no longer practical.

What About Overcapping?

Overcapping is where you are advised to overcap your fascia and soffit with a thin layer of PVC. Be very aware that this is cowboy territory! Some overcaps are as thin as a 2 pence peice and even if a little thicker such as the width of a pencil. At Strathclyde Roofline we follow the practice of total replacement not over-cladding – of the roofline area using high quality, maintenance free uPVC.
